VFW Post 3619 is named after two local WWI veterans who were killed in action on the same day, almost 100 years ago prior to the start of Cole-Miers Riders, though assigned to different units. Cpl. Murphy J. Cole was assigned to Company H, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. He died as the result of a direct hit by an artillery round on July 18, 1918. His body was not recovered. Cpl. Frank Miers was assigned to Company E, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. He died while advancing against the enemy and was initially buried in France before being returned home in 1921.
A Special Patch was issued to the First 18 Riding Members of Cole-Miers Riders. As Both CPL Cole and CPL Miers were both KIA on the 18th of July of 1918 The First 18 patch shall Denote the sacrifice and selfless service of our First 18 Rider Group Members in Honor of our Sponsoring Posts Namesake and these Amazing Men who made the Ultimate Sacrifice.
